Weekend Guide: New York Edition

We interrupt this MP3 broadcast to alert you to three very special musical events of the DIY persuasion taking place this weekend in sunny Brooklyn, New York.

Tonight there will be a show with Hive Dwellers a.k.a. Calvin Johnson at the Market Hotel rooftop, one of my favorite places ever. It is the first public show there in nearly two years and, says Todd P, "the last chance to see Market in its old glory before renovation begins." This will be an unamplified event and no alcohol will be served, however, the last two Calvin Johnson shows I attended were also at alcohol-free art spaces so I can say authoritatively that it will still be amazing. This show was relocated from the Flatiron Hotel Rooftop due to dangerous cell phone towers that could not be removed in time.

On Saturday evening Mr. Patrick has also organized a record release show for Black Dice at the Living Bread Deli, a space near the Morgan L that he discovered last year with John Rambo and Jordan Michael. Here's how he describes it:
Living Bread Deli is a hard hat lunch counter in the East Williamsburg Industrial Park that serves chicken parm and potato salad by day, and becomes a checkerboard linoleum-floored, all ages show space by night. Comfy banquette booths & cheap snacks are available. They serve beer there, with a license, at deli prices. I have not been so excited about a new(ish) venue space in a long time. This show will be legendary.

Some tickets are still available here. Oneohtrix Point Never also performs.

Also on Saturday night, at Williamsburg's last-standing radical/occasional house venue, Dead Herring: the ever-excellent Hilly Eye with Sleepies, NT, and Queening.

FRIDAY-4/6 >> Hive Dwellers (unamplified acoustic band from CALVIN JOHNSON) . Hamish Kilgour (of THE CLEAN) & Leila Adu . the Curious Mystery . Katie Eastburn (x Young People) @ THE MARKET HOTEL

SATURDAY-4/7 >> BLACK DICE . ONEOHTRIX POINT NEVER . Turn to Crime (Derek Stanton from AWESOME COLOR) . dj David Donahue @ LIVING BREAD DELI (2 Knickerbocker Ave @ Johnson Ave // L to Morgan)

SATURDAY-4/7 >> SLEEPIES . HILLY EYE . NT . QUEENING (@ Dead Herring, 141 S. 5th St, 9pm/$5, more info here)
